Donna envied Jane very much and longed with all her heart to be just like her. Jane was the smartest girl Donna ever known. She always got straight A’s and she was pretty too. One day, after a soccer practice, Jane and Donna were standing together waiting for their mothers. Donna watched Jane read a textbook. She saw that Jane looked very sad. When she asked her why was she so sad, Jane looked at Donna for a moment and whispered softly inside her ears. She said her dad used a leather strap to beat her the night before. Her dad wanted to see straight A’s for her test as he always get straight A’s in school. Since Jane was his daughter, she must also get straight A’s. Jane’s dad hit her because she got B+. Donna told her that her dad had never hit her before. Just then, Jane’s mother came driving in a big, white car. Jane rushed and opened the car door. She looked back and asked Donna to keep it as a secret. Jane and Donna became best friends then. However from that day onwards, Donna did not envy Jane anymore….

I found this book at the National library while browsing for books written by Roald Dahl.
Looking at this book, you might not be interested. However it has a very heart touching story…… This story is about a Phantom who hunts the opera in Paris. His name was Erik. Erik had fallen deeply in love with Christine Daae, a new singer at the opera house. Unfortunately, she was in love with a man named Raoul de chagny. Erik was jealous whenever he saw Christine with Raoul. The Phantom, Erik threatened Christine to marry him or he would harm those people in the opera house. When he proposed to Christine, she rejected . In the end, Erik died because of love. Before he died, he told Christine to bury him in secret place. I like the story as Christine braved all the dangers ahead of her. At the same time, I also pity the phantom.

Anne was having cornflakes for her breakfast while reading the print on the cereal box. Her big sister, Mary was seating just right across her, reading the other side of the cereal box. The other side of the box said that the awesome prize was to have your name in gold. As Mary read on, Anne’s interest in the prize grew. This is what it said: “just send in one dollar with proof-of –purchase seal from this box and spell out your first name on the information blank. We will send you a special pin with your name spelled in gold. [Only one per family, please.]” What caught Anne’s attention was to have her name in gold. When she told Mary that she wanted her very own name to be spelled out in sparkling gold, her sister disagreed. She said she saw it first and wanted to send her name in, besides Anne did not have a dollar.Several weeks passed and the pin arrived in a small package. Mary asked Anne if she would like to see the pin but Anne did not want to see it. Mary put the pin in the box and went downstairs. Anne could not resist opening the box. She saw her name in gold. Anne was shocked and touched by her sister’s love and concern. The pin became a blurred gold through her tears…
Stacie was seven years old when she met Kiki , a little girl who just moved into her neighbourhood . Soon both of them became good friends. They always play and laugh together.
One day, Stacie noticed Kiki had lots of big bruises everywhere.
That night, Stacie’s mum received a phone call from Kiki’s mum. She told her that Kiki had a bad kind of cancer called leukemia and she had to undergo a bone marrow test with her brother, Sam. If that test matched, Kiki would get a good chance of surviving.
Unfortunately, there was no match. Stacie and her two sisters decided to do something to help. They sold lemonade and cookies and made over sixty dollars. Then they used the money to contribute to the children’s leukemia center. What they want was for Kiki and the other children to get well.
Months went by and Kiki had lost all her hair and she was not getting any better.
The day Kiki died, Stacie cried more then ever in her life. Even though Kiki had passed away, Stacie could still feel that Kiki was always by her side.
Below is the song Stacie sang for Kiki at her anniversary memorial service. The title of this song is “can you feel the love tonight” by Elton John. The song was from the movie ‘The Lion King’ and it was the first movies Kiki and Stacie watched.
This is a very touching story and makes me feel like crying … L
My best friend is Thahirah. She has long black curly hair and she wears specs. We are both 10 years old. We know each other when we were in P3. We spend most of our time chatting on the phone, drawing fashion outfits, joking, reading comics and many others. Although we are of different races, we get along very well.I am very miserable now because we will not be in the same class next year.I regard her as my best friend and hope she will not forget that she once have a best friend like me!!!
This story is adapted from the book “Chicken soup for the kids soul”.
Rebecca was an eleven year old girl who loved to paint rainbows. Her parents had divorced when she was young. One day, Rebecca was going to perform at the school play. Her mother went for a vacation for a few days and could not see her perform. It was the first time her mother had been away since her parents divorced. Rebecca was unusually anxious about the separation and cried when they had to say good bye.
Coming home one night over her father’s memorial day weekend cookout, Rebecca, her father and his new wife were killed when a drunk driver traveling the wrong way down the highway hit their car. Only Rebecca’s nine year old brother, Oliver, survived the crash, protected by his sister’s body. Rebecca’s funeral was held on the day of the school play. It was a beautiful spring day as bright as Rebecca. Her mother rushed home when she heard her daughter had died in a car accident. Her worried mother closed her eyes and prayed that she needed Rebecca to show her a rainbow sign that she was in peace. Suddenly it started to rain, then it stopped. Someone shouted: “hey everybody ! look there is a rainbow out there. Rebecca’s mother now knew that her daughter was now in peace. Her mother gazed up the sky and whispered ” thank you’’.
I like this story. It is a very touching story. I learned that we must treasure every one when they are alive, especially those who are close to us. .
My mother told me they are coming to Singapore next year to perform on the Esplanade theatre. I only know the story is about a phantom, which means ‘an opera ghost’ who fall in love with a singer, and the ending was quite sad. Does anyone know the story??? i love this song very very much the first time i heard it. It’s very touching…
After James parent’s got eaten up by an escaped rhinoceros, he was sent to live with his two horrible aunts. James only brought a small suit case containing a pair of pyjamas and a tooth brush with him. Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker were both selfish, lazy and cruel people. Right from the beginning, they started beating poor James for almost no reason.
One day, as James was in the garden, he met an old man. The old man gave him a bag of ‘magical’ green crystals which could move as though it was alive!! James accidentally dropped the bag and the crystals burrowed into the earth.
The next morning, a nearby tree grows to a huge size and bears a giant peach! When James saw a hole in the peach, he entered it and met lots of unusual and interesting characters such as the centipede, the earthworm, the old-green-grasshopper, miss spider, the lady bug, the silkworm and the glow worm.
Out of a sudden, the peach dropped from the tree and it rolled down the hill and squashed James aunts. James and his new friends who were inside the giant peach rolled into the ocean and embarked their adventures. They faced many dangers. James’s bravery and cleverness got his friends out of danger from time to time and finally they landed on the Empire State Building.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters in the book are very funny and cute. Although it has a sad beginning, it has a happy ending.
